Jane Austen's love classic becomes a sparkling jukebox show
When five maids shake up the fine society of Regency England in the theater tent in Landshut, Jane Austen's famous novel transforms into a fast-paced, musical stage experience. Pride and Prejudice* (*or so) by Isobel McArthur combines pointed dialogues, pop songs, slapstick, and a surprisingly modern perspective on love, money, and societal dependency.
Five maids take the stage
Mrs. Bennet has five daughters and an existential problem: Without advantageous marriages, the family faces social decline after the father's death. While Jane, Elizabeth, Mary, Kitty, and Lydia struggle for love, recognition, and self-determination, the staff peers behind the scenes of this world. Anne, Tillie, Clara, Flo, and Effie not only tell the story but embody almost the entire cast.
Jane Austen with pop, wit, and feminist sharpness
The production by Fabiola Kuonen gives Austen's classic a poppy-feminist update. The dramaturgy shifts the focus from the gentry to those women who, in the original, mostly serve tea, make beds, and grocery shop. From this new perspective emerges a class struggle twist: Economic dependency and female self-determination are as central as the romantic tension between Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy.
A tour de force of acting
The all-female ensemble switches with great precision between roles, social classes, and emotional states. Costumes by Natascha Dick, set design by Sanja Halb, and musical direction by Marylene Salamin create a vibrant theater atmosphere, where karaoke interludes and classic love stories meet directly. The acting thrives on rapid role changes, physical play, and the rhythm of the music.
A classic with contemporary resonance
Jane Austen's novel was published in 1813 and tells the story of Elizabeth Bennet and Fitzwilliam Darcy, whose approach is shaped by prejudice, wounded vanity, and societal expectations. McArthur's adaptation opens this material to new voices. The maids are given space to make their observations, desires, and own stories visible. Press reviews praised the version as humorous, feminist, and surprisingly true to the original work.
Premiere with introduction and opening celebration
The Landshut premiere begins on Friday, December 4, 2026, at 7:30 PM in the theater tent. The Landestheater Niederbayern invites you to a short introduction at 6:45 PM. This musical promises a stage experience full of pace, music, and social nuances. If you love Jane Austen, appreciate pointed comedies, or want to discover modern theater adaptations, you will experience an unusual encounter of literary classic, pop comedy, and feminist stage art here.
